In early November OFFGA ran its inaugural hydrangea growers pre-season bbq which saw growers, exporters and trade supply reps come together to share experiences and knowledge regarding growing of hydrangeas for cut flower production. With over 40 people in attendance it was a good representation of growers involved in the hydrangea industry. This years theme was innovation and growers were encouraged to share ideas and methods on topics such as packing, pruning, growing and spraying. There were some impressive gadgets presented and also some simple solutions. The importance of conducting regular trials, be they postharvest, spray, fertilising or other, was highlighted by the wide range of methods employed by growers and also the need for the Hydrangea industry to remain competitive internationally by continuously improving quality and consistency. Field reps from both Farmlands and Horticentre shared information on new sprays and the use of

biological control agents in a growing programme. The key problems of powdery mildew, botrytis and insect control were the main focus.

We also had an export market report from Mike Limbrick on how the NZ flower export industry has performed over the last 12 months and an outlook for the season ahead.

. The range of variables influencing supply and demand make forecasting difficult but there is a general sense of optimism.

Here's hoping the season ahead is drier than the previous one.
